NRS: No new tax on vehicles

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) says the federal government did not introduce any new tax on vehicles.
The NRS was responding to a viral infographic claiming that the federal government introduced a new tax on vehicles, expected to take effect from July 1, 2026.
In a statement on Sunday, Dare Adekanmbi, special adviser to the NRS chairman and spokesperson for the service, said the message circulating online did not originate from the agency or any government institution.
He said the viral material directs owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to pay an unspecified levy “online or at approved banks and agencies”, while also referencing an “incorrect government website”.
Adekanmbi said the agency’s attention was drawn to the message, which, he noted, was designed to appear authentic by using official government insignia.
“The attention of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has been drawn to a viral infographic message claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a fresh vehicle tax on all registered vehicles effective from 1 July 2026,” the statement reads.
“The message, which was adorned with the federal government logo to give the appearance of authenticity, advises vehicle owners to make payments online or at approved banks and agencies.
“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the Service or any government agency.”
He advised citizens to ignore the message and rely only on verified government channels for information on tax policies and payment obligations.
“Citizens are, therefore, advised to disregard the fabricated message designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” the statement added.
The agency also urged Nigerians to follow its official communication platforms for accurate updates on tax administration and government directives.
