2027: Tinubu assigns Kalu to coordinate Abia APC

Date:

  • …plans automatic Senate tickets for key lawmakers

By Haruna Salami

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly assigned former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, to coordinate the activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development is seen as part of ongoing political realignments aimed at strengthening the party’s structure in the South-East, where the APC has historically faced strong opposition.
Kalu, who also chairs the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, confirmed the directive following a recent visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, the former Senate Chief Whip expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by the President.
He said he was committed to working with stakeholders in Abia State to ensure unity within the party and to position the APC for electoral success in 2027.
According to him, the objective is to produce candidates capable of winning elections while advancing the interests of Abia State and Nigeria as a whole.
The assignment places Kalu at the centre of the APC’s mobilisation efforts in Abia State as the party intensifies preparations for the next election cycle.
In a related development, there are indications that the Presidency may be considering automatic return tickets for some serving senators ahead of 2027.
This was disclosed by the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, during a meeting with political stakeholders.
According to him, lawmakers being considered include prominent figures such as Adamu Aliero, Abdulaziz Yari, Kalu, Opeyemi Bamidele, Yahaya Abdullahi, Danjuma Goje, and others.
The governor said the lawmakers have contributed significantly to legislative stability and executive coordination, particularly in supporting key government policies and reforms.
He added that their roles in ensuring smooth governance and legislative cooperation were factors influencing discussions around continuity.
Although there has been no official confirmation from the Presidency or APC national leadership, the development has already sparked political debate within party and policy circles.
Analysts say the moves reflect a broader strategy by the Tinubu administration to consolidate party structures at state levels while retaining experienced lawmakers ahead of the 2027 elections.
