Kaduna State has joined the global community in celebrating World Press Freedom Day 2026, with this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” inspired by reflections from the UNESCO conference held in Lusaka, Zambia.

The 2026 theme emphasises the crucial role of a free, responsible, and independent media in fostering peace, defending human rights, and supporting sustainable development, especially amid increasing threats to free expression and the credibility of information.

In Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna State, the media remains a fundamental pillar of democratic governance, informing the public, shaping debate, and ensuring accountability.

The Kaduna State Government, under Governor Senator Uba Sani, has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the constitutional right to press freedom and fostering an environment where journalists can operate responsibly without undue interference.

Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said Governor Uba Sani’s dedication to press freedom reflects a strong belief that a free, responsible, and trustworthy media is vital for peace, good governance, and democratic stability.

“Governor Uba Sani’s dedication to press freedom demonstrates a strong belief that a free, responsible, and trustworthy media is essential for peace, good governance, democratic stability, and an informed and engaged society,” Maiyaki said.

The commissioner noted that, at a time when misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust, social cohesion, and national security, the importance of ethical, accurate, and responsible journalism has never been greater.

“As misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust and national cohesion, ethical, accurate, and professional journalism remains non-negotiable. Kaduna State will continue to support journalists while promoting integrity and accountability in the media,” he added.

He further stated that as the international community advocates stronger protections for journalists and the preservation of civic space, Kaduna State remains committed to safeguarding media professionals, promoting professionalism, fact-checking, and adherence to ethical standards.

Maiyaki also announced that the Ministry of Information and Culture will continue to work closely with media partners, support training programmes, and implement initiatives to combat misinformation while reinforcing the credibility of journalism.
