Bauch state Commissioner of Information, Alhaji Salisu Ahmed Barau, has urged Journalists to resist the temptation of serving parochial interests by adhering to their professional ethics.
Salisu made the charge during the opening ceremony of workshop, organised by Nigerian Press Council for working Journalists covering North East with the theme: “Effective Coverage and Reportage of 2015 General Elections” at NUJ Bauchi press center yesterday
The commissioner was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Jummai Salamatu Abubakar,
He said, “Journalists should resist the temptation of serving parochial interest; our commitment must be for the survival of corporate Nigeria. In doing this, may I also advise you to adhere to your professional ethics and also remove from amongst you undesirable elements and quarks, people that are painting the profession black”.
The Commissioner commended NPC for the role it played in training and retraining of journalists to update themselves with new trends, in view of the dynamics in knowledge seeking.
Speaking earlier, the acting Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Press Council, Mr. Nnamdi Njemanze challenged the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Government, Security operatives and the Nigerian Guild of Editors to do everything possible to protect the lives of Journalists during elections, especially in the troubled North East sub-region.
He challenged journalists to brace themselves with electoral act and the ethics of the Journalism to effectively educate the electorate on things that are expected of them during campaigns, elections and holding government officials accountable to them.
