Sahara group opens two recycling hubs in Lagos community

The Sahara Group Foundation has commissioned two new recycling hubs in Ojodu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and economic empowerment.
The hubs, which are the 18th and 19th under the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative, were inaugurated on the same day.
The initiative is designed to encourage responsible waste management by helping residents convert recyclable waste into economic value through structured recycling activities.
Speaking during the inauguration, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the project reflected the organisation’s commitment to sustainable community development.
She said, “The commissioning of these Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Ojodu reflects our commitment to creating sustainable ecosystems that empower communities.
“By bringing structured recycling solutions closer to residents, we are not only promoting environmental responsibility but also creating opportunities for households to derive economic value from recycling activities.”
Menakaya added that the initiative would also strengthen livelihoods and improve community resilience through what she described as “EXTRApreneurship”.
Representatives of Sahara Group, officials of Ojodu LCDA, community leaders, volunteers and residents attended the ceremony.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, David Olusegun Odunmbaku, the Chief of Staff, Olaide Bello, commended Sahara Group Foundation for supporting environmental sustainability in the council area.
He described the recycling hubs as timely, noting that the project aligned with the council’s development priorities.
Bello said, “The initiative aligns strongly with our sustainability and development priorities by transforming waste into valuable resources, reducing environmental impact, supporting climate action, and creating livelihood opportunities for residents.”
According to the Foundation, the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative has recycled over 1,000 tonnes of waste materials since inception while impacting more than 2,000 livelihoods directly and indirectly through collection, sorting and logistics activities.
The Foundation added that it would continue expanding the initiative across Lagos and other parts of the country to promote cleaner and more sustainable communities.
