The crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Tuesday took a different dimension as the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), docked the former National Chairman of the party, Prof. Shehu Gabam, for alleged financial misappropriation, other charges.
The Chief Magistrate Court had in a criminal case with file, No. DCC/10/2026, between Gabam and the current Chairman of SDP, Sodiq Abubakar, alongside Chukwuma Uchechukwu, arraigned the suspects on six counts charges bordering on financial misappropriation at SDP amounting to over N35 million, forgery, and breach of trust.
However, when the case was called up Gabam pleaded not guilty before the judge of the Magistrate Court, Amauche Onyedium.
The magistrate therefore granted Gabam N3 million bail with two surtiies in like wise who must be residents within Abuja.
Addressing newsmen after the hearing, National Chairman of the party, Sodiq Abubakar said the opposition party decided to drag Gabam before the court as an effort to cleanse it from external interference and influences.
“We are confident that the Judiciary will do justice to our millions of our members,” Abubakar said.
According to him, the party had asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prosecute Gabam, but nothing was done, which he said forced the party to approach the Court to seek redress.
He accused Gabam of squandering the party’s fund in his time between 2022 and 2023, to the tune of over 240 pictures.
Recall that Abubakar was elected as the National Chairman of the SDP during the party’s National Convention which held in Bauchi on May 9th, 2026.
However, it could be recalled that at the weekend, thugs suspected to be loyal to the Gabam group had pulled down the gate of the SDP’s National Secretariait which allowed him to take over the offices.
