The recent surge in the price of cooking gas to N2,000 per kg has placed an undue burden on Nigerian households. Happening just days to the Eid-el-Kabir festival, a period when families traditionally prepare elaborate meals, this development is particularly concerning. Filling a 12.5kg cylinder now costs N25,000, a steep figure for most homes already struggling with stretched incomes.
And this comes at a time when other essentials have also become prohibitively expensive. A ram, central to Eid celebrations for many Muslim families, reportedly costs between N700,000 and one million naira this season. The prices of other staples for festive meals, have similarly climbed beyond the reach of average citizens. Taken together, these increases illustrate the severe pressure on household budgets.
Over the past three years, Nigerians have navigated difficult economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration. While the intent of subsidy removal and currency adjustments was to stabilize the economy, the immediate impact has been a sustained rise in the cost of living. Official data released quarterly suggests inflation is moderating, yet market realities tell a different story. For many workers facing stagnant wages and scarce job opportunities, purchasing power continues to erode.
We wish to recall that many citizens embraced cooking gas in response to government’s advocacy for cleaner energy. The shift from firewood and kerosene was a conscious choice to protect our forests and improve public health. However, if gas prices remain elevated, there is a real risk that households will revert to cheaper, less environmentally friendly options. Such a reversal would undermine years of progress in environmental protection and public health advocacy, no doubt.
Indeed, global factors, including tensions between Iran and the US-Israel bloc, have contributed to volatility in energy markets. And Nigerians are already contending with high petrol costs for transportation and generators. The added burden of expensive cooking gas compounds an already difficult situation for families and small businesses.
We contend that given Nigeria’s abundant natural gas reserves, the current scarcity and high domestic prices raise important questions about supply and distribution. Our expectation is that local availability should translate to affordability for citizens. There is a clear need for policy measures that prioritize domestic consumption and shield households from external shocks.
This newspaper, therefore, urge the Federal Government to consider immediate steps to address this situation: First, government must boost domestic supply by prioritizing local allocation of LPG to stabilize prices.
The second step should be to review temporary fiscal measures, including VAT and import duties on LPG, to provide short-term relief to consumers.
Thirdly, we urge government to strengthen market oversight through the NMDPRA to ensure transparent pricing and prevent artificial scarcity or hoarding.
And finally, Nigeria should accelerate investment in gas infrastructure to reduce long-term costs and improve distribution efficiency nationwide.
We insist that the responsibility of government includes ensuring that basic necessities remain accessible, especially during periods of economic adjustment. With wages yet to catch up with inflation and unemployment still a major concern, interventions that ease the cost of cooking fuel, food, and other essentials are critical.
As Nigerians were preparing for this year’s Eid-el-Kabir, many were forced to choose between cultural obligations and basic survival. A coordinated response that brings down the cost of cooking gas would not only have provided relief but also reinforced public confidence in the government’s commitment to citizens’ welfare.
