The recent spate of abductions targeting schools across Borno and Oyo states, among others, compels sober reflection on the state of security in our nation. While Nigerians have long contended with the menace of banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping for ransom, the calculated invasion of educational institutions represents a particularly distressing dimension of this crisis.
Schools are sanctuaries of learning and the cradle of our future leadership. When pupils and students are subjected to the trauma of abduction, the damage extends beyond the immediate victims. It strikes at the very foundation of national development. The psychological scars left on young minds cannot be easily quantified, nor can the chilling effect such incidents have on school enrollment, especially in vulnerable communities. Parents are increasingly faced with the agonizing choice between education and safety.
This disturbing pattern did not emerge overnight. The nation was shaken by the 2014 abduction in Chibok, Borno State, involving over 200 schoolgirls. That was followed by the Dapchi incident in Yobe State in 2018, where more than 100 girls were taken. The full resolution of both cases remains pending. Subsequent attacks, including the invasion of the Federal Government College in Birnin Yauri, where over 100 students were seized, and the prolonged captivity of students of Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna, underscore a troubling trend. In several instances, parents were compelled to pay substantial ransoms for the release of their children, often in batches. Tertiary institutions have not been spared, with undergraduates in Zamfara, Nasarawa, and other states also falling victim, female students disproportionately so, at different times.
We acknowledge that government at all levels deserves commendation for recorded gains in degrading the capacity of terrorist groups and reducing the frequency of large-scale attacks. These milestones in the broader fight against insecurity are welcome. However, the resurgence of school-targeted kidnappings suggests that critical gaps remain. It raises pertinent questions about intelligence gathering, rapid response capabilities, and the protection of soft targets.
We recall that in the aftermath of Chibok, the “Safe Schools Initiative” was launched with considerable promise. Conceived as a multi-stakeholder framework to secure learning environments, it was to provide perimeter fencing, security personnel, and early-warning systems for schools in high-risk areas. Several years on, the current realities prompt a necessary inquiry: what is the status of this initiative? To what extent has it been funded, implemented, and monitored? We believe that a comprehensive review of the project, with transparent reporting on achievements and challenges would be timely and reassuring to the public.
The way forward, in our view, requires sustained, coordinated action. First, security architecture around schools must be strengthened through community policing, technology deployment, and dedicated rapid-response units. Second, inter-agency collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities should be deepened to ensure that intelligence translates into preventive action. Third, the Safe Schools Initiative should be revitalized with clear timelines, budgetary allocations, and accountability mechanisms.
Finally, addressing the root causes remains essential. Economic deprivation and weak governance structures often provide fertile ground for criminality. Investment in education, youth employment, and rural development must accompany security measures.
This newspaper contends that the safety of the Nigerian child is non-negotiable. Protecting our schools is not merely a security imperative; it is a national duty. Our collective future depends on the assurance that children can learn without fear. The time to act decisively, and with unity of purpose, is now.
