Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has launched a sharp critique against Nigeria’s opposition parties, declaring that their turbulent internal primary elections have thoroughly debunked their claims of being a superior alternative to established political parties.

During his monthly media briefing in Abuja, the former Rivers State governor pointed out the sharp contradiction between the opposition’s public rhetoric on democratic ideals and the chaotic reality of their internal practices.

He highlighted the widespread protests, formal complaints, and public skepticism voiced even by their own presidential aspirants regarding the credibility of recent party congresses and primaries.

”They told Nigerians they were the new face of democracy and the alternative platform for change.

“But what we have seen is that even within their own structures, there are allegations of irregularities and protests over congresses and primaries,” he stated.

The Minister urged Nigerian voters to evaluate political figures by their actions rather than their campaign promises.

Effective party management in Nigeria, he argued, demands a realistic grasp of the nation’s unique political landscape—a trait he believes older, time-tested political parties possess due to their deep experience navigating organizational hurdles and internal friction.

Wike also dismissed narratives suggesting that older, major political parties are losing their relevance, countering that true political longevity is earned through consistent performance, internal unity, and sustained public backing.

His remarks come during a period of intense political restructuring, as various opposition factions work to realign their ranks and expand their voter base ahead of upcoming elections.

Wike also challenged political leaders to shift their energy away from discrediting rivals and focus instead on fortifying democratic institutions and fostering transparent internal party democracy.
