The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has procured and distributed 48 modern vein finders and accessories to 14 Secondary Healthcare Facilities (SHF) across Abuja, marking a significant step forward in local healthcare delivery.
The initiative, driven by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, aims to modernize clinical operations and dramatically improve the patient experience in public hospitals under the Hospitals Management Board (HMB).
According to Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary for the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), these advanced medical devices are critical for improving the accuracy and efficiency of venous access procedures.
She explained that: vein finders illuminate superficial vein patterns, making it substantially easier for medical personnel to locate veins for intravenous (IV) cannulation and insertion
blood sample collection (venipuncture), fast, painless access during emergencies.
”These machines will make it easy to access a patient’s vein in a quick, painless manner,” Dr. Fasawe stated, noting that the technology will be particularly beneficial for children, elderly individuals, and obese patients who often present with challenging venous anatomy.
Furthermore, she noted that the technology protects patients from the discomfort of multiple needle pricks. It allows newly trained doctors to secure IV access swiftly and confidently, ultimately making hospital visits far less traumatic for vulnerable patients.
To guarantee the effective deployment and longevity of the new equipment, the FCTA conducted intensive, in-house practical training sessions for healthcare representatives from all 14 beneficiary hospitals.
“The training programs focused on: proper handling and operation to ensure immediate clinical efficiency. Application techniques tailored to diverse patient demographics.
“Routine maintenance to guarantee long-term sustainability across all facilities,” she added .
This proactive approach underscores the Wike-led FCTA’s broader commitment to equipping Abuja’s healthcare facilities with modern technology, supporting frontline medical workers, and elevating the overall standard of public health services.
