The Nigerian government has screened over 500 of its citizens in South Africa for evacuation following xenophobic attacks by South African nationals.
In a statement released in Abuja Sunday by Nigerian Foreign Ministry signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, it noted that Nigerian government has also approved five evacuation flights to bring Nigerians stranded in South Africa back home, following their successful screening and clearance.
According to the statement, “I just received confirmation from our Mission in Pretoria that the screening exercise of Nigerian nationals that have indicated interest to be evacuated back home has been extended to Wednesday 10th June, 2026. So far, over 500 persons has been screened and cleared.
“Mr. President has approved five evacuation flights that will be operated by Air Peace and the first flight which will airlift about 270 passengers is expected to leave Johannesburg on Monday evening if the necessary permits and clearance are secured for the aircraft.
“Departure time and estimated time of arrival in Lagos, Nigeria will be provided when I receive updates from our High Commission in South Africa” the statement concluded.
