One person was killed and seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries following the explosion of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Bagega–Anka Road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
A resident of Bagega village, Sambo Dan Bagega, said the incident occurred at about 6:15 p.m. on Monday when a commercial vehicle conveying passengers from Bagega to Anka ran over the explosive device, triggering a blast.
According to community members, the IED was suspected to have been planted by armed bandits who have continued to terrorise communities in the area.
“The passengers were travelling from Bagega village to Anka town when the device detonated, killing one passenger on the spot. Seven others sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a healthcare facility in Bagega,” a community source said.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the suspected IED explosion claimed one life and left seven others injured.
He disclosed that joint security forces responded promptly to the incident, with the command deploying specialised tactical teams to the scene in collaboration with the military.
According to him, the security operatives were tasked with assessing the situation, clearing the affected route of any potential threats, and ensuring the safety of commuters and residents.
Abubakar added that efforts were also being made to restore normalcy along the road and prevent further attacks.
The police spokesperson reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating banditry and terrorism in the state, citing recent successes recorded by security agencies in the fight against criminal elements.
He assured residents that security forces would leave no stone unturned in their efforts to eliminate terrorist groups operating in the state and urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information.
