The Zamfara State Police Command has announced the successful repulsion of a bandit attack on Kanoma Town and Gidan Daji Village in Kanoma District of Maru Local Government Area, killing six suspected bandits during the operation.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 11:00 a.m. when a large number of armed bandits attacked the communities using sophisticated weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), general-purpose machine guns (GPMGs), anti-aircraft guns and AK-47 rifles.

The police spokesperson said that upon receiving a distress call, a joint security team comprising police tactical operatives from Maru Division, military personnel attached to Operation Fansan Yamma, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), and local vigilantes, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), swiftly mobilised to the area.

He explained that the security operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat and preventing the attack from succeeding.

During the operation, six suspected bandits riding on two motorcycles were neutralised, while several others escaped into nearby forests with suspected gunshot wounds.
The command noted that no casualties were recorded among security personnel or residents of the affected communities.

DSP Abubakar added that security has been reinforced in the area, with sustained patrols being conducted to maintain peace, reassure residents and track down the fleeing suspects.

The Zamfara State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state and urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance ongoing efforts against criminal activities.
