The Imo State chapter of the Action Peoples’ Party (APP) has called for an investigation into an alleged attack on its state secretariat in Owerri, claiming that suspected political thugs invaded the premises and destroyed party property.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Steve Nnamdi, the APP alleged that the incident occurred at about 6:10 a.m. when armed individuals scaled the perimeter fence and forcefully entered the secretariat.
The party further claimed that eyewitnesses identified the group as being led by an aide to the Imo State governor alongside other associates, alleging that the intruders vandalized its billboard and other campaign materials within the premises.
Describing the development as a threat to democracy and peaceful political participation, the APP said the incident was part of a pattern of alleged political intimidation, citing similar occurrences in Umuoyima, Owerri Municipal Council, and Arondizuogu in Ideato North Local Government Area.
The party called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to launch a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the allegations, insisting that anyone found responsible should face prosecution regardless of political affiliation.
The APP also appealed to Governor Hope Uzodinma and security agencies to ensure a level playing field for all political parties as preparations for future elections continue.
While urging authorities to act, the party appealed to its members and supporters to remain calm, law-abiding and avoid any form of retaliation pending the outcome of investigations.
