Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has lamented the worsening security situation in Benue State, declaring that the unrest has escalated far beyond traditional farmer-herder clashes to involve organized criminal gangs, kidnappers, and political interests.
Speaking on Thursday at a security townhall meeting at the Government House in Makurdi, the IGP described the violence in the state as “unacceptable” and a source of constant concern for both residents and security agencies.
Disu, who was in Benue on an official assessment visit, expressed sadness over how a state historically known for peace and hospitality has been overtaken by an endless cycle of attacks and reprisals.
“Benue was once known as a peaceful and hospitable state, but it has been overtaken by violence.
“This cycle of attacks and reprisals must end immediately,” Disu said.
To tackle the deteriorating security landscape, the police leadership and state government highlighted several strategic measures.
Disu conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s strict directive that escalating insecurity in Benue will no longer be tolerated, warning that illegal firearm possession will face an immediate crackdown.
The IGP urged Benue youths to resist being recruited as political thugs or agents of violence by influential figures ahead of upcoming political activities.
He noted that Police officers have been instructed to act decisively under Force Order 237 when confronted by armed criminals.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Mobile Policing), Francis Iduh, announced targeted operations across 14 identified security flashpoints including Gbajimba, Kwande, Agatu, Naka, Otukpo, and Makurdi to flush out bandits and armed herders from farmlands and forests.
On his part, Benue State governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, commended the IGP’s visit and reiterated his call for the establishment of state police.
He maintained that local officers who understand the terrain are best suited to secure border communities.
