The Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gombe state Command, Mr. Gyama Gyawiya has called on citizens of Gombe state not to relent in maintaining cattle routes to avoid farmers, herders conflicts.
Gyawiya made the disclosure in Gombe, during Gombe 2nd security summit, while presenting his paper tagged ‘understanding security landscape in Gombe state and opportunity’.
He noted that before now, cattle routes were there during our forefathers saying that the international and state cattle routes which is said to have passed through the 11 local government areas of the state, there is urgent need to maintained it, so as to stay away from clashes.
According to him, due to the related peace in Gombe, have attracted influx of people far and near to settle and engaged their daily activities but noted that we most rise and say no to routes encroachment.
These routes are part of transhumance corridors used by pastorists particularly the Fulani’s herders that moved between Nigeria and neighbouring countries such as Cameroon, Chad and Niger he said.
He said the Agro rangers personnel are mandated to escort herders with their cattles along these routes to ensure protection of cattles rustling and farm encroachment.
While calling on the stakeholders, the Commandant implored them to partner with the state government to provide motorcycles for Agro rangers personnel to operate adding that some stakeholders have started complying with the gesture which he said the Command have received 3 operational motorcycles to cover Balanga, Billiri and Cham cattle routes.
He appreciated with the Gombe state government for their initiatives through quick response to intervene and mitigate between farmers and herders conflicts in the state.
