A man identified as Mallam Shehu has allegedly been killed by his elder brother following a dispute over onion seedlings in Barkeji village, Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday after an argument between the two brothers escalated into a confrontation.
Community sources said the disagreement centred on onion seedlings, although the circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated by the police.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the suspect, identified as Hadi, had been arrested and taken into custody.
Rufai said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
“Yes, the case has been transferred to Sokoto, and the lone suspect is being detained. He is cooperating with police detectives handling the homicide case,” Rufai said.
The remains of the deceased were reportedly deposited at a nearby health facility.
Meanwhile, community leaders in Barkeji have appealed for calm and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands as the police continue their investigation.
