A solar energy expert, Engr. Abubakar Yusha’u Adamu, has urged the federal government and northern state governments to fully adopt solar and wind energy as viable alternatives to solve Nigeria’s ongoing electricity crisis.

Adamu made this call in a statement shared with our correspondent in Kaduna yesterday.

He mentioned he’s been overseeing a project to provide solar power to entire communities in Kaduna State, noting that solar energy is more affordable and reliable than the national grid, which mainly relies on hydropower.

“We are advising the government, particularly here in the north, to consider using solar energy or wind as alternatives to hydropower on the national grid.

“They are 100 percent reliable, more renewable than the national grid of hydropower,” he added.

The expert pointed out that Kaduna State is already benefiting from solar deployment, citing the some hospitals in the State where solar power is now the primary source of electricity.

He encouraged governments to expand the use of renewable energy to boost business activities across the region.

“Power is the lifeline of every business. Solar energy is smart, renewable, and cost-effective. If properly harnessed, it can provide continuous power,” Adamu stated.

He also revealed that even the Presidential Villa is transitioning to solar power, arguing that other parts of the country should follow suit.

“If the villa would opt for it, why not the whole nation since we have been unable to solve our hydropower problem for years,” he stressed.

Adamu urged northern state governments to invest in solar and wind infrastructure to improve energy access, support small and medium businesses, and cut reliance on what he called the “unreliable national grid.”
