Executive Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Hon. Nuhu Daniel, has pledged government backed scholarships for public secondary school students, who participated in the maiden 2026 Kwali Area Council STEM Programme.
Daniel announced the commitment during the grand finale of the science quiz and debate competition held Saturday at the Alhaji Gambo Memorial Town Hall in Kwali.
He commended the initiative, organized by his wife and Kwali First Lady, Mrs. Abigail Nuhu, promising that his administration will prioritize youth capacity building and technological innovation alongside physical infrastructure.
“I want my life to be a template for the younger generation… ,(My administration) will continue to support the programme of the First Lady whenever resources are available, ensuring our youth are fully integrated into the scheme of things,” Daniel said.
He added that future editions will expand beyond indigenous students to include all resident students across the council.
The competition featured 12 students selected from the six political wards of Kwali Area Council.
Mrs. Nuhu explained that the annual initiative aims to break socio-economic barriers surrounding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and inspire students to pursue careers in medicine, engineering, and technology.
“I am here to change the mindset that science is difficult and belongs only to children from wealthy families due to high tuition fees and private tutors.
“With determination and hard work, any student can excel in science,” Mrs. Nuhu stated during her address.
Dr. Bilkisu Sani, STEM 2026 Committee Chairperson and Head of Department for Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship at the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), encouraged participants to leverage STEM subjects as a foundation for future technological leadership.
The event concluded with cash prize presentations to top-performing students, alongside awards of excellence presented to the Kwali Chairman and key local stakeholders for their contributions to basic education.
