Taraba 2027: Kefas campaign council warns supporters over social media conduct

The re-election campaign council of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has warned supporters that offensive and harmful activities on social media could attract legal consequences as political campaigns resume ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The Director-General of the campaign council, Danladi Baido, said Governor Kefas’s anti-thuggery Executive Order covers not only physical violence but also cyberbullying and other forms of irresponsible conduct online.

In a statement issued by the council’s Director of Media and Publicity, Emmanuel Bello, Baido cautioned supporters against name-calling, insults, false accusations, malinformation and the circulation of false alarms.

He said political disagreements should not degenerate into violence, stressing that supporters must respect the rights of opponents to campaign peacefully.

Baido also warned against taking the law into one’s hands when provoked, noting that the Taraba State Government had outlawed pre- and post-election violence.

He urged supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to make the governor’s achievements and policy agenda the focus of their campaign rather than engaging in personal attacks against political opponents.

According to him, both young and older campaigners must exercise restraint in their social media activities, as relevant laws would be enforced throughout the electioneering period.

Baido said the campaign council was committed to creating a peaceful environment for all political actors and called on the media to maintain fairness and balance in reporting the election.

He assured media practitioners that the council would work with them to promote peaceful, credible and issue-based campaigns in Taraba State.“There is no election in Nigeria where the issue of hunger and insecurity won’t come up,” he said.

According to Wike, Nigeria’s political environment is different from societies where voters are largely economically independent. He argued that many Nigerians depend on political leaders and structures at the family, community, local government and ward levels for assistance.

The minister said voters may therefore consider access to political networks, financial support, food and other forms of assistance when deciding how to cast their ballots.

He urged analysts assessing Tinubu’s chances in 2027 not to assume that current hardship would automatically result in an electoral backlash against the president.

Wike recalled that similar concerns over insecurity and hardship were raised during elections held under former President Muhammadu Buhari, yet such issues did not by themselves determine electoral outcomes.
