Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the deadly attack on Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area, which claimed several lives, including those of four police officers.
The governor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, described the attack as a grave threat to the peace and security of Benue State.
Alia particularly condemned the killing of the four police officers, saying their deaths underscored the sacrifices security personnel make in the line of duty.
He described the incident as another disturbing reminder of persistent insecurity and attacks on vulnerable communities and law enforcement personnel in the area.
“I extend heartfelt condolences to the people of Ayilamo, the families of all the victims and the entire Logo Local Government community. We mourn with you and assure you that you are not alone in this difficult period,” Alia said.
The governor also commiserated with the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Benue State over the deaths of the officers.
“We honour their courage and sacrifice and pray that God grants their families, colleagues and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he added.
Alia commends DSS over arrest of suspects
Alia commended personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Benue and Nasarawa states for an operation that reportedly led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly connected with the Ayilamo attack.
He described the arrests as a significant step towards establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing those responsible to justice.
The governor urged the DSS and other security agencies to intensify investigations and pursue all credible leads to identify other persons who may have been involved.
“Every available lead should be diligently followed to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices, sponsors, collaborators and other persons connected with the attack. All those found culpable must face the full weight of the law,” Alia said.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to collaborate with security agencies to strengthen security in Ayilamo, Logo and other vulnerable communities across Benue State.
According to him, the state government remains committed to preventing further attacks, protecting residents, restoring peace and providing necessary support to affected communities.
Alia appealed to residents of Ayilamo and surrounding communities to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while cooperating with security agencies.
“I encourage residents to provide credible and timely information to the security agencies while refraining from actions that could heighten tension or undermine the ongoing investigation,” he said.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property and restoring lasting peace across the state.
“We remain resolute in our determination to protect lives and property, uphold justice and restore lasting peace across Benue State,” Alia said.
