The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council has accused the All Progressives Congress of admitting failure to tackle insecurity following a comment by its campaign Director-General, Senator Abdulaziz Yari.
The ADC-PCC said Yari’s remarks showed that the ruling party lacked credible solutions to the country’s security challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yari reportedly made the comment while addressing stakeholders during a visit to Kebbi State on Monday.
He was quoted as saying, “If Buhari, who is a retired military man, could not wipe out insecurity, what do people expect from Tinubu?”
Reacting in a statement, the Director of Media and Publicity of the ADC-PCC, Kola Ologbondiyan, described the comment as a “damning indictment” of the APC government.
He said it was disturbing that a senior figure responsible for promoting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid appeared to be questioning the president’s capacity to address insecurity.
“For a party that has been in power for nearly 12 years, this is a shocking admission of failure,” Ologbondiyan said.
He argued that the statement would undermine public confidence in the APC’s ability to protect Nigerians, particularly as communities continued to face banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and killings.
“Rather than inspire confidence in Nigerians, the statement from the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council reinforces the growing perception that the ruling party has run out of ideas and has no credible answers to the nation’s security challenges,” he added.
Ologbondiyan said Nigerians continued to live in fear as insecurity threatened lives, livelihoods and communities across the country.
He faulted what he described as the suggestion that Tinubu could not be expected to defeat insecurity because former President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired military officer, had also struggled with the problem.
“This is not the language of a party offering hope; it is an expression of helplessness from a party seeking another mandate,” he said.
The ADC spokesman also questioned why the APC should seek another four-year term when, according to him, its campaign leadership appeared uncertain about the president’s capacity to address the security crisis.
“How can the APC ask Nigerians to renew its mandate when its own campaign leadership is raising doubts about the capacity of its presidential candidate to tackle insecurity?” he asked.
He said Nigeria needed leaders who would accept responsibility, develop practical solutions and demonstrate the political will to protect citizens rather than offer excuses for persistent insecurity.
Ologbondiyan argued that tackling the crisis required more than political promises, stressing the need for effective coordination among security agencies, adequate equipment, improved intelligence gathering and sustained investment in the welfare and capacity of security personnel.
He said the ADC, which is backing former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, offered Nigerians an alternative, describing the former vice-president as an experienced leader with a vision for national security, economic recovery and national cohesion.
The ADC-PCC urged Nigerians to consider Yari’s reported remarks when assessing the APC’s record on security and deciding whether to support the ruling party for another term.
“The choice before Nigerians is clear: continue with a party whose record on insecurity has attracted widespread criticism, or support a credible alternative committed to rescuing the country, restoring public confidence and making the protection of lives and property a national priority,” Ologbondiyan said.
