APC campaign council denies plot to assassinate Atiku

Date:

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has denied allegations of a plot to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, challenging the accuser to submit evidence to security agencies for investigation.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the 2027 general elections, was reportedly the target of an alleged assassination plot raised by an ADC member, Timi Frank.

The APC campaign spokesman, Dele Alake, made the denial while responding to the allegation, insisting that neither President Bola Tinubu, the Presidency nor the ruling party was involved in any plan to harm Atiku or other opposition figures.

The council said any credible threat to life should be treated seriously, irrespective of political affiliation.

It urged Frank to present any evidence in his possession to law enforcement agencies to facilitate a prompt investigation.

The APC campaign council also dismissed claims that security personnel attached to Atiku had been withdrawn.

It maintained that the former vice-president remained protected by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

According to the council, Tinubu had recently directed security agencies to strengthen protection for all presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.

Alake described the assassination allegation as “typical opposition rabble-rousing”, accusing those behind it of attempting to heat up the political atmosphere and attract international attention through social media.

“Let our political competition be peaceful, lawful, and focused on the big issues that matter to Nigerians, not character assassination or wild, baseless allegations,” the statement read.

The council further cited Tinubu’s history in opposition politics, urging political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.

It called for factual public discourse and a peaceful democratic process, warning against allegations capable of escalating political tension.

The council did not provide further details of any independent investigation into Frank’s claim in the statement.
