The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has strongly condemned the reported attack on Omoyele Sowore and his team members in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
In a statement signed by its executive director, Rev. David Ugolor, and made available to the media in Kaduna, ANEEJ said political violence sends a dangerous signal, undermines democratic participation, and threatens the rule of law.
Rev. Ugolor said no individual should face violence or intimidation for expressing political views, organizing peacefully, or participating in public affairs.
He described reports that armed men disarmed a police officer assigned to Mr. Sowore and forcibly took the officer away as particularly disturbing, saying the allegations require an immediate investigation and a clear public explanation from the relevant authorities.
The ANEEJ executive director called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to establish the facts, identify the perpetrators, and ensure that anyone responsible is arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He stressed that the investigation should be prompt, impartial, and transparent, regardless of the identities or affiliations of those involved.
Rev. Ugolor also urged the authorities to establish the whereabouts of everyone reportedly taken away, ensure their safety, protect those affected, and prevent further violence.
According to him, as Nigeria approaches another election cycle, security agencies should demonstrate professionalism and impartiality in protecting all political actors and citizens.
He warned that impunity for political violence encourages further attacks and weakens public confidence in democratic institutions.
Rev. Ugolor added that ANEEJ stands firmly against political violence and calls on political leaders and their supporters to uphold peaceful engagement, human rights, and respect for the law.
