President Bola Tinubu has blamed former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other past leaders for the economic hardship and hunger confronting Nigerians, saying his administration is working to correct the mistakes of previous governments.
The President made the remarks on Saturday at the All Progressives Congress presidential rally held at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tinubu, who accused Atiku of using public resources for personal advantage while serving as Vice-President, challenged the African Democratic Congress chieftain to explain how he established a university while in government.
He said his administration was dealing with the consequences of decisions taken by those who previously managed the country’s affairs.
“Those people talking of hunger, I am cleaning the mess they created. Atiku was one of them,” the President said.
“Ask him how he built a university while in office as Vice-President in charge of our economy. Who built the university for him? It is your money!”
The President’s comments came amid growing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition figures and Nigerians continuing to raise concerns over the rising cost of living and economic hardship.
Tinubu also assured Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, that he would not regret his political decisions, particularly his support for the APC and the coalition backing the President’s re-election bid.
He commended Fubara for his conduct during the political crisis that rocked Rivers State, saying he had intervened on the governor’s behalf.
“Fubara, you will not regret what you have done. During the crisis created by misunderstanding in the family, for me, I intervened on your behalf,” Tinubu said.
“I want to thank you specifically for maturity, respect for elders, you respect our positions, you are a committed democrat. You will not regret your actions.”
The President’s remarks followed Fubara’s public endorsement of his re-election bid, during which the governor pledged that Rivers State would deliver three million votes for Tinubu in 2027.
The rally attracted APC governors, party leaders, political stakeholders and supporters from across the state as the ruling party intensified its mobilisation ahead of the next general election.
