From Suleiman Idris, Lagos
There were indications yesterday that works hitherto suspended in the remodelling projects of airports across Nigeria will commence within the next few weeks as the federal government has made provisions in the 2014 budget.
At the continuation of its oversight function on projects captured in the 2013 budget, the senate committee on aviation yesterday said the contractors will soon return to site to complete works on the projects. the committee chairman, Hope Uzodima affirmed that contrary to reports, the projects, most of which he said has reached 90 percent completion will not be abandoned.
After an inspection tour and a meeting with heads of agencies and directors in Lagos, the committee however disclosed there is paucity of fund in the ministry.
At the new international terminal under construction in Lagos, Uzodima said the facility is small in size.
He said, “having used the present terminal for 40 years, it is expected something better and bigger should have been envisioned” but said the senate will ensure no project is suspended.
According to him, the committee in conjunction with the ministry will set up a committee to prioritise areas where N174.3 billion debts have been expanded without the knowledge and approval of the Senate.
