Adamawa: GPF urges Gov. Fintiri to save Jackson from the hangman’s noose

Date:

From Umar Dankano, Yola

A Sociocultural indigenous ethnic nationalities organization under the aegis of ‘Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF) has cried out to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to grant the convicted Sunday Jackson clemency over the death sentence hanging on his head for murder offence.

Recalled that Jackson as a farmer in his village had a fatal encounter with a herder who took his livestock on his farm to feed on the crops which turned into a physical combat resulting in the death of the herder due knife injuries he sustained.

Jackson was arrested by the police and arraigned before a lower court where it was ruled that he should die by hanging.

Unfortunately for Jackson, the Supreme court upheld that verdict.

But lader of the group, Engineer Markus Gunduri at a press conference in Yola Tuesday said that the primary objective of the plea was to ensure justice and peace, stressing that their business is not to review the judgements by courts but rather to enjoy the window provided for by the 1999 Constitution which gives the Chief executive of a state the power to exercise his prerogative of mercy to pardon or grant respite on court’s case.

“The center point of our  press briefing today is the conviction and capital sentence imposed on Mr Sunday Jackson by the Nigerian Courts following a fatal altercation between him and a nomadic herdsman which led to the demise of the latter. “
