… blames incumbency for election losses in Anambra, FCT

By Lateef Ibrahim

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has acknowledged that internal challenges within the party significantly contributed to its poor performance in recent elections.
Aregbesola made the admission during the party’s national convention, where he reviewed the outcome of the Anambra State governorship election and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council polls.
He noted that beyond external pressures, the party was hampered by inadequate funding and an unprepared political structure, factors he said weakened its chances at the polls.
According to him, while the party faced stiff competition from opponents who leveraged incumbency advantages and financial influence, ADC’s internal shortcomings also played a decisive role in its defeat in both Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory elections.
Despite the setbacks, the former Osun State governor expressed optimism that the party has drawn lessons from the experience and is repositioning ahead of upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
He emphasized the need for improved organisation and stronger financial backing as the party prepares to challenge dominant parties in future contests.
In the FCT polls, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured five out of six area councils, while the remaining seat was won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
