The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has commenced repair works at the C2 Maitama Substation following the resolution of a dispute over the invasion and encroachment on the facility by alleged land grabbers.
The development comes weeks after the invasion left homes, businesses, diplomatic missions and government institutions in Maitama and surrounding areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) without electricity.
On 10 July, AEDC said it could no longer supply electricity from the C2 Maitama Substation after the facility was invaded by land grabbers allegedly led by an Assistant Director of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
The company said vital electricity cables and other network infrastructure were damaged during the incident, making it “unsafe and technically impossible” to continue supply from the facility.
The C2 Maitama Substation is a critical distribution installation serving homes, businesses, diplomatic missions and government institutions in Maitama and surrounding areas of the FCT.
A day later, on 11 July, AEDC said it had escalated the matter to the highest levels of the FCT Administration.
According to the distribution company, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, intervened to facilitate an urgent resolution of the issues.
In a statement on Tuesday, AEDC said the intervention led to the resolution of “the issues arising from the invasion and encroachment on the C2 Maitama Substation.”
“Despite the unforeseen and exceptionally challenging circumstances surrounding the incident, a resolution has been reached, paving the way for the commencement of repair works and the restoration of electricity supply to the affected communities.
“AEDC expresses its profound appreciation to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, and the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, for their swift intervention, invaluable support and leadership in facilitating the resolution of this matter. Their timely involvement was instrumental in achieving a positive outcome,” the statement said.
The AEDC said its technical teams have now mobilised to the site and have commenced repair, reinstatement and restoration of the damaged electricity infrastructure.
“Every effort is being made to complete the works safely and restore supply to customers in the shortest possible time. AEDC sincerely thanks our customers for their patience, understanding and unwavering support throughout this difficult period.
“We remain committed to safeguarding critical electricity infrastructure and delivering safe, reliable and sustainable power supply to all our customers,” AEDC said.
