AFCON 2015: Ayew out of Togo clash

Black Stars of Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew has been ruled out of Wednesday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo due to a thigh injury, the team’s doctor has confirmed.

The Olympique Marseille picked up a thigh injury during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Uganda and had to be replaced in the second half.

Early prognosis revealed the injury was not serious but after observations in Accra, the talented winger was asked to sit out the important qualifier.

Ayew said to have suffered a minimal grade I tear will be sidelined for up to three weeks.

“On the pitch we examined Dede (Andre) and what our immediate observation was that it was a soft tissue contusion- a contusion of the upper part of the inner thigh,” team doctor Baba Adam said.

“Instantly, we could not elicit any fluid collection so normally what happens is we allow the player to rest and we did that by icing and 8 hours thereafter when we felt everything had settled, when we arrived in Ghana we sent him for an MRI investigation and it revealed was that he had an minimal tear.

“The thigh has been sored and we advised that he should stay, intensify the physiotherapy on him and all things being equal in two –three weeks he should be up and about.”

Ghana’s team travelled to Tamale on Monday morning without the mercurial winger who captained the team in Kampala.

The Black Stars are without Kwadwo Asamoah and Asamoah Gyan who are all injured.

The hosts need to avoid defeat against the Hawks to seal qualification to next year’s finals to be hosted by Equatorial Guinea.
