Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has been named the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, a move widely seen as an effort to broaden the party’s national appeal ahead of the polls.
The announcement, made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, confirms Amaechi as the running mate to the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
According to the party, Amaechi’s selection followed extensive consultations among party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from the country’s geopolitical zones. His emergence also comes after a strong showing at the party’s presidential primaries, where he finished as runner-up.
The ADC described Amaechi as one of Nigeria’s most experienced political figures, citing his service as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation under the federal government.
Party officials believe the former governor’s political influence across the South-South and other parts of Southern Nigeria will provide a strategic advantage to the Atiku ticket as it seeks to attract support across regional and political divides.
In its statement, the ADC argued that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket combines extensive experience in governance, public administration, and economic management, presenting what it called a credible alternative for Nigerians seeking solutions to the nation’s economic and security challenges.
The party further expressed confidence that the partnership would energise its growing coalition and strengthen its campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
With the formal unveiling of Amaechi as vice-presidential candidate, attention is expected to shift to how the opposition coalition plans to consolidate support nationwide and challenge rival political parties in what promises to be a highly competitive race for the presidency.
