Analyst faults Senator Lawan’s governorship quest in Yobe

There is a growing opposition to the quest of former Senate President Ahmad Lawan to contest for the governorship seat of Yobe State.

The growing voices of disagreement are coming largely from Zone C, the constituency he has represented since the advent of democratic rule in Nigeria in 1999.

The conversation around the Senator’s governorship ambition arose after a group of youths said they had raised N188 million to pay for his APC nomination form when the party begins sales of forms to aspirants.

However, some youths have questioned the rationale for Lawan’s new area of focus, claiming that his years in the National Assembly has not benefited the constituency with anything tangible, asking him to go home and rest.

Senator Ahmed Lawan represents Zone C comprising Bade, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Nguru, Machina and Yusufari local government areas.

He has been in the National Assembly since 1999, rising to become the Senate President from June 11, 2019 to June 11, 2023.

A political analyst and public affairs commentator, Abdullahi Mohammed Almajir, is of the opinion that Senator Lawan should go home and rest.

He said that the state need dynamic young minds to continue from where the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni will stop.

Almajir questioned the wisdom of raising N188 million for someone who has the means to fund his campaign.

He advised the youths that claimed to have raised the money, to channel it into providing potable water to their communities currently facing acute water shortage and serious waterborne diseases including blindness and kidney failures.

Almajir challenged those promoting the Lawan governorship candidature to publicly list his achievements over the years to warrant votes from the people.

Also, a Damaturu based youth leader, Mustapha Musa urged youths in the state not to allow themselves be used by those he called “non-performing politicians who only give them money during elections and disappear completely till another election cycle.”

“As the 2027 general elections approach, we must rate the performance of all those seeking elective positions especially the governorship with a view to bringing the best. One who is always  concerned about the growth and development of the state without sectional, political or religious considerations,” he said.

The political atmosphere in Yobe is currently on the high as political gladiators perfect strategies ahed of the commencement of the electoral processes.

The current governor, Mai Mala Buni, is running out his final term in office on May 29, 2027.
