The African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has called for the implementation of true fiscal federalism in Nigeria to help federating units harness natural resources in their domain.
The Deputy Executive Director of ANEEJ, Leo Atakpu made the call while speaking at a meeting with Civil Society Organisations from across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria to address the issue of federalism, resource control, and ethnic nationality/Identity, yesterday.
Mr Leo who was a panelist, took a swipe at poor fiscal federalism implementation in Nigeria which has led many actors to continually call for ‘true fiscal federalism’ where the federating units would be allowed to harness natural resources in their domain and pay taxes to the central government as practiced in other federal governments elsewhere in the world.
He noted that the current arrangement in Nigeria where federating states gather in Abuja monthly to share oil money and VAT was unsustainable and gives way to laziness amongst most federating units, a situation that has bred bad governance, poverty, and ethno-religious crisis in the country.
