The All Progressives Congress (APC ) has suffered another setback in Kano State following the defection of former House of Representatives member Mustapha Bala Dawaki to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Dawaki, who previously served as Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, dumped the ruling party barely one week after losing the party’s ticket for the 2027 elections through a consensus arrangement.
His defection adds to the growing political realignments currently unfolding ahead of the general elections, particularly in Kano where parties are battling for influence and control of party structures.
The development was confirmed by Saifullahi Hassan, who disclosed that Dawaki was formally received into the NDC fold by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his Miller Road residence in Kano.
According to Hassan, Dawaki has now joined the Kwankwasiyya political movement within the NDC, a bloc considered influential in Kano politics.
The latest move is expected to further intensify political calculations within both the APC and NDC in Kano State, especially as the opposition party continues consultations over the distribution of tickets for various elective positions.
However, it remains unclear whether Dawaki’s defection will automatically guarantee him a ticket under the NDC platform for the 2027 elections.
