The President, Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists (NAH), Mr Dom Nwachukwu, said that the application of modern approaches in the water sector would improve water resources management in the country.
Nwachukwu, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, called for the applcation of modern technology such as water conservation in the provision of potable water rather than mere drilling of boreholes.
“Provision of water from the ground is not by merely drilling boreholes.
“Integrated water resource management should be pursued vigorously and modern technology approaches be applied including conservation especially in the arid zones.’’
Nwachukwu, therefore, stressed the need for stakeholders in the water sector, especially private borehole drillers and governments at all levels to make use of ‘Aquifer Storage and Recovery’ (ASR) equipment.
According to him, this is a relatively new technology of storing water in the aquifer for later use.
He warned against indiscriminate drilling of boreholes.
The president further advised borehole drillers should consult water specialists for proper discovery of water position in the ground.
“NAH-Consults, an arm of the association, is available to carry out detailed studies of catchments and aquifers and to handle borehole projects according to specification,’’ Nwachukwu said. (NAN)
