From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil has condemned dissolution of the university’s Governing Council by governor of Kano state, Abba Yusuf.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr Aliyu Ahmad and Secretary, Dr Mudassir Nasir in Kano on Wednesday, ASUU described the dissolution of the Governing Council as inappropriate without reconstituting new one.
The Union expressed dismay over the continuous running of the University without a governing council as a result of the dissolution, adding that the decision is a breach and disregard to the provisions of the Kano University of Science and Technology (Amendment) Law 2017.
The Union calls on the Governor to reconstitute the Governing Council as a matter of urgency in order to avoid paralyzing academic and non-academic activities in the institution.
The Union also said they had intimated the government on several occasions, calling on it to reconstitute the Governing Council for smooth running of the institution but their calls were going to def ears.
The Union also urged the state government to settle outstanding entitlements of the staff.
Shedding more light, the Chairman of the association expressed displeasure over the dissolution of the Governing Council and failure to reconstitute new one.
He alleged that virtually all decisions are now taken by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Yusuf Kofarmata, which according to him is a breach of law governing the running of the University.
“An expenditure of N2 million to above can not be executed without the approval of the Governing Council. Now, it is either to suspend the expenditure or the Commissioner for Higher Education approve.
“If we allow this to continue, state governors would make it a norm to run state university without Governing Council and that is a huge problem to the running of the university.
“As I am talking to you now, the Commissioner is the one taking and approving almost everything decisions in the university. It went to the extent that the portrait of the university ‘s Pro-Chancellor has been removed and replaced by the Commissioner’s portrait. This has never happened in the history of the university.
“So, we call on the governor to take note of these problems and do the needful in the interest of the University and the state,” Dr Ahmad said.
