A former ally of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Aslam Aliyu, has resigned from the party and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring her support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement announcing her defection, Aliyu said she left the ADC after concluding that the opposition lacked a practical roadmap for addressing Nigeria’s challenges. She maintained that the party had failed to present a clear and sustainable national development agenda beyond criticizing the current administration.
Aliyu noted that she had remained loyal to Atiku’s political camp for nearly two decades but said careful reflection on the country’s political future convinced her that the opposition was not prepared to offer a credible alternative government.
Calling on Nigerian youths, women and other opposition members, she urged them to join the APC and support President Tinubu’s administration, insisting that national progress requires constructive participation rather than what she described as “counterproductive politics.”
The Zamfara-born politician also expressed confidence that President Tinubu would secure re-election in 2027, declaring that “there is no vacancy in Aso Rock.”
According to Aliyu, her decision to join the APC was motivated by her desire to contribute more effectively to national development through what she described as a more structured political platform.
