A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. (Amb.) Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe, has strongly condemned the reported assassination attempt on a leading presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr. Peter Obi, in Benin City, Edo State.
Addressing members of the National Assembly Press Corps, Uzokwe described the incident as a direct assault on Nigeria’s democracy and constitutional order.
“I condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms,” he said. “An attack on a presidential aspirant is not merely an attack on an individual; it is a direct assault on our democracy and the collective right of Nigerians to freely choose their leaders without fear, intimidation or violence.”
He stressed that democracy thrives on the healthy competition of ideas, not violence or assassination plots, warning that the political space must not be turned into a battlefield.
The lawmaker called on the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, to immediately address the situation and ensure the safety of all political actors in the state, regardless of party affiliation.
