Bauchi Police intercepts trailer with INEC empty ballot boxes

Date:

From Ahmed Kaigama, Bauchi

The Bauchi state Police Command has warned politicians against spreading false information that will incite the general public, just as it said it intercepted a trailer with empty INEC ballot boxes.
The Police said it intercepted a trailer, loaded with over 1550 empty ballot boxes, at 7:30 am, on Saturday, at a check point in Darazo local government area of the state.
However, while the items were off loaded at the police station, Government Reserved Area (GRA), it was discovered that the vehicle was carrying empty transparent ballot boxes.
Investigations revealed that the vehicle took off from Lagos state and was heading to Gombe state, but was intercepted at a check point in Darazo local government area, following a tip-off received by the Police.
The Police spokesman, DSP Mohammed Haruna gave the warning at the weekend in Bauchi.
According to him, such a rumour was not only misleading but a figment of the imagination of mischief makers who want to cause disharmony among the peace loving citizens of Bauchi State in particular and the nation at large.
DSP Haruna said, “Members of the public are hereby urged to disregard the rumour and go about their lawful business, as the Command is working tirelessly to ensure safety and security in the state.”
Responding over the incident, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and a member of Buhari Campaign Organization in Bauchi, Alhaji Aliyu Sa’idu confirmed and said, “After off-loading the items we are convinced that the boxes are empty; we initially gathered that the boxes were loaded with thumb-printed ballot boxes.
He called on the INEC to always inform the political parties and the press about all their activities in order to avoid this kind of situation, saying “If we must have credible and acceptable election people, especially the political parties should be involve in INEC activities. Our initial curiosity has been satisfied”.
