Benue 2027: Assembly Aspirant Pushes Law on Power Rotation, More Seats for Okpokwu

Date:

Benue Assembly

From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi
A rights activist and politician, Hon. Daniel Edoache Atayi, has called for the institutionalisation of power rotation in Benue State, urging that it be backed by law to ensure fairness and inclusiveness in the governorship.

Atayi, who is aspiring to represent Okpokwu State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the call while unveiling his political blueprint.

He said he had consulted widely with stakeholders in his community of Olengbecho, Ekeh Ward, and received overwhelming support for his ambition to represent Okpokwu Local Government Area.

The aspirant outlined a two-point agenda driving his campaign, with emphasis on legislating power rotation and expanding representation for Okpokwu.

According to him, the lack of a structured rotation system for the governorship has persisted for too long, breeding disaffection and ethnic imbalance among the major blocs in the state.

“The principle of power rotation, particularly for the governorship, has been my agitation for over a decade. It is time the state enacts a law to guarantee inclusivity and give minorities a fair shot at the number one seat,” he said.

Atayi also advocated the creation of additional state constituencies in Okpokwu LGA, arguing that the area is too large to be represented by a single lawmaker.

He noted that Okpokwu comprises three major districts—Edumoga, Okpoga, and Ichama—each of which, he said, is sizeable enough to stand as a separate constituency.

Recalling that Edumoga once secured a constituency through a court ruling in the early years of democracy, he questioned why the arrangement was not sustained.
“We need at least one or two more constituencies. This can be achieved within a short time if there is political will. The current structure is affecting our population strength and representation,” he added.

Atayi described himself as a long-time advocate of political equality and grassroots inclusion, pledging to champion policies that reflect the interests of his constituents.

His declaration, observers say, signals the beginning of what could be a competitive race ahead of the 2027 elections in Okpokwu.
