President Bola Tinubu on Monday held a closed-door meeting with Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and former Benue governor Gabriel Suswam at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid the deepening crisis over the All Progressives Congress (APC) Benue Central Senatorial ticket.
Although details of the meeting were not immediately disclosed, the talks come against the backdrop of escalating tensions within the Benue chapter of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Suswam, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, had emerged winner of the party’s Benue Central senatorial primary before the result was overturned by the party’s appeal committee.
The development has intensified the internal power struggle in the state’s ruling party, with Governor Alia and supporters of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, locked in a battle for the control of the APC structure in Benue.
While it could not be confirmed whether the Benue political crisis formed the core of discussions, the timing of the meeting has fuelled speculation that the Presidency is making efforts to reconcile aggrieved stakeholders and restore unity within the party.
The Presidency had yet to issue an official statement on the outcome of the meeting as of the time of filing this report.
