Bizwoman in court for criminal breach of trust, cheating

The police have arraigned a businesswoman, Ujuma Onyema, 32, in an Abuja Senior Magistrates’ court for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

Onyema, a resident of Zakari Street, Dawaki, Abuja, is charged with two counts of criminal breach of trust and cheating before Senior Magistrate Abdullahi Illelah.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Idi, said Pastor Okeke Mark of Assembles of God Church Umuahia, Abia, lodged a report against Onyema at the Gwarinpa Police Station, Abuja, on December 18.

Idi alleged that, sometime in September, 2013, the accused collected N330, 000 from the complainant to secure a study visa for his son Ikechukwu Okezie to travel to Ukraine.

He said that after collected the money, the accused refused to procure the visa and deliberately converted the money to her personal use.

The prosecutor said that all efforts to recover the money failed, adding that the offence contravened sections 312 and 322 of the Penal code respectively.

If convicted, she faces 10 years imprisonment or an option to pay a fine or both.

She pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

Illelah, however, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two reasonable and reliable sureties each in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must both be resident within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the matter to February 26 for hearing proper. (NAN)
