Bus conductor charged with stabbing girlfriend to know fate April 24

An Upper Area court in Karu, Abuja has fixed April 24 for sentencing of a bus conductor, James Amawe, 27, who stabbed his girlfriend with a knife.

Judge Umar Kagarko reserved the date for sentencing, in order for the police to find out the condition of the victim, Destiny Sunday, currently on admission in a hospital.

“I will not sentence the accused now even after he pleaded guilty to the charges. The court will admit him in the sum of N20, 000 with a surety in like sum.

“The case is hereby, adjourned to April 24 for sentencing. This is to enable the victim to get proper treatment, as I hear she has been admitted at the Nyanya General Hospital,” he said.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Israel Nanpan told the court that the accused was arrested in his house on February 20 at about 7 p.m. while he was beating and stabbing Sunday, his girlfriend.

He said that the accused’s neighbours called the police when they heard the girlfriend screaming for help.

Nanpan said that the accused was arrested by a team of Policemen led by Insp. Kawas Hosea of Nyanya Police Station.

Nanpan added that the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 247 of the Penal code.

If convicted he faces five years in prison with an option to pay a fine or both.

Counsel to the accused, Godwin Chukwu, had also prayed the Court to admit his client to bail. (NAN)
