Report from Maza village in the northern Cameroon has revealed that about eleven people were reportedly killed and scores wounded in an attack suspected to have been launched by the Nigerian Boko Haram insurgents.
According to a report which was monitored in Jos yesterday on the Hausa Service of the Voice of America, revealed that the insurgents suddenly opened fire with guns on a travelling bus heading to Marwa town, killing eleven and wounding many, adding that those wounded have been taken to a hospital for treatment.
A Cameroon security official was quoted in the report to have said that the causality figure could rise to over 25 as the attack was too bad.
According to the report, the news of the incident came when some travelers escaped to Marwa town following the attack, adding that the attack occurred on Thursday, last week as communication facilities were destroyed.
Maza, which is the village in the northern Cameroon, is located between Nigeria and Cameroon republic.
Meanwhile indications emerged today that the insurgents have in the early hours of Saturday attacked the base of the Multi-National Joint Task Force, MNJTF, in Baga, Borno State, eventually dislodging the soldiers.
A senior security official who confirmed the incident to journalists in Maiduguri, the state capital, said the attack was one of the fiercest in recent times as soldiers battled to hold their grounds without much success.
According to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the attack on the base started at about 5 a.m. on Saturday.
According to reports it was a bad outing for the military which is being expected to issue a statement on the development today.
The MNJTF was created by defense and military chiefs from the six countries that make up the Lake Chad Basin Commission to combat arms trafficking, terrorism and related cross-border attacks that have continued to rise in the region.
Boko Haram terrorists had seen the existence of the MNJTF as a major threat to their operations; hence they continued to attack the base and the town with a view to having full control of the area.
Details of the attack are not yet clear, but eyewitnesses say causalities may be high.
