Zaria: Fire guts Sabon Gari market, destroys 300 shops

An early morning fire on Saturday destroyed no fewer than 300 shops at Sabon Garin Zaria main market in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited the scene reported that the fire burnt down buildings, sheds and property worth millions of naira.

In an interview with NAN, the Vice Chairman, Butchers’ Association, Sabon Gari market, Malam Adamu Ibrahim, said the cause of the fire was unknown.

Ibrahim said: “Reports received from eyewitnesses so far indicate that the fire started either by midnight or early morning of Saturday and it is suspected to be caused by electricity problem.

“It took the intervention of good Samaritans and men of the fire service to put out the fire and prevent its escalation.

“However, more than 300 shops have already been destroyed. We are appealing to government to come to our aid.”

Areas affected included butchers and fish stalls. (NAN)
