Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima has ordered the upward review of scholarship given to the State graduate indigenes in law schools, from N300,000 to five hundred thousand Naira each for female lawyers and four hundred thousand for their male counterpart.
The amount was given as tuition support to sponsor graduates of law from Borno state, who get admission into any of the campuses of the Nigerian Law School, to be called into the Nigerian Bar Association.
The Governor ordered the review on Tuesday, while presenting 85 Law School students with the cheques of N300, 000 each and a laptop, at the Government House, Maiduguri.
The Governor ordered that the state’s scholarship board to process and provide additional N200, 000 for female lawyers and N100, 000 for male lawyers.
“We are offering N500, 000 to female students to encourage them to study law; as there is a saying that: if you educate a woman, you educate a nation; but when you educate a man you educate an individual, hence the need to encourage our women folk to be educated”, Shettima stated.
Governor Shettima also promised that the students and graduates from the Law School with the best result amongst the 85 students would be given an automatic scholarship for post graduate degrees in Petroleum Energy Law abroad, as the state prepares in the event of oil discovery in the Lake Chad.
“It was for the same reason that the state sent 20 indigenes to the United Kingdom for Master’s degree on Petroleum Geo-Sciences”, he said.
Shettima said investing in education was government’s top priority, as the Boko Haram insurgency was borne out of ignorance, illiteracy and joblessness, adding that he was a product of a public school and so, there is no reason why they should not make public schools conducive for learning and teaching.
He called on the benefiting students to put in their best and make the state proud by coming out with flying colours.
Speaking earlier, the supervising commissioner of Higher education, Hon. Abba Nguru commended the governor for approving the payment of the allowances of the state students and their studying in various law schools across the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the benefiting students, Mustapha Abba Gaji thanked the state government for the gesture.
