The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) Chapter, has suspended its ongoing strike following the Kaduna State Government’s approval of the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement.
The decision was announced in a statement jointly signed by the chapter Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Comrade Silas Amos Bakut, following a congress held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the 1,000-Seater Auditorium of Kaduna State University.
The congress deliberated on the implementation of the signed 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement at Kaduna State University, particularly the new Conditions of Service for academic staff in Nigerian universities, which took effect in January 2026.
The union announced that the Visitor to the university and Governor of Kaduna State had approved the adoption and implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement for KASU academic staff, effective October 2026.
It also stated that the University Governing Council and Management had approved the payment of nine months’ arrears covering the period from January to September 2026.
According to Abdullahi and Bakut, the measures represent significant progress towards restoring stability and harmony within the university and are expected to improve staff welfare, retention and productivity.
The union expressed appreciation for the commitment demonstrated by the Kaduna State Government, the Governing Council and the university management in addressing the issues, adding that it looked forward to the full and timely implementation of the approved measures.
Following the approvals, the congress unanimously resolved to accept the offers and suspend the strike with effect from 12:01 a.m. on September 18, 2026.
The union thanked the governor for approving the implementation of the agreement at KASU, describing the decision as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to making the institution one of Nigeria’s leading universities, particularly in the area of staff welfare.
It also commended the Government Negotiation Team for its dedication and swift action and appreciated the KASU management for providing the necessary support, documents and information that facilitated the resolution.
The union further commended the state government and university management for their patience, restraint and understanding during the strike, noting that its members were neither threatened nor intimidated.
According to the union, the approach marked a positive departure from previous experiences, as it was allowed to follow its established procedures in commencing and suspending the strike, reflecting respect for due process and healthy industrial relations.
The union said it looked forward to welcoming students back to classes and thanked all stakeholders and members of the public for their patience, understanding and support in resolving the dispute.
