Breaking: Uba Sani Pays Off $247,000 Tuition Backlog for Stranded Students

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has come to the rescue of state-sponsored students studying abroad by settling over $247,000 (₦407.9 million) in accumulated foreign tuition fees—a backlog inherited from the previous administration that had left many students stranded, anxious, and unable to complete their studies.

Among the beneficiaries are medical and nursing students at the Medical University of Havana in Cuba, where a whopping $164,010 was paid to allow Kaduna’s future health professionals finally access their results, complete their programs, and process their visas. Similarly, at Debrecen University in Hungary, $51,400 was cleared, ending months of frustration for students who had been on the verge of deportation or academic expulsion.

Also included in the payment were tuition balances at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, where $13,827.08 was paid, and institutions in Uganda—Kampala International University (KIU) and Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU)—which collectively received $17,998. The intervention brought instant relief to affected students, many of whom had spent months unable to access transcripts or graduate despite completing coursework.

In a further show of commitment, Governor Sani directed the Kaduna State Scholarship and Loans Board to engage all foreign universities where Kaduna students are enrolled, to verify any overlooked debts and ensure no student is left behind.

Executive Secretary of the Board, Prof. Yahya Saleh Ibrahim, described the move as “a rescue mission” that has restored Kaduna’s credibility and the hopes of dozens of families. “Governor Uba Sani is showing what leadership truly means—solving problems, not making excuses,” he said.

The move has earned the Governor wide acclaim, reinforcing his reputation as a responsive leader committed to human capital development. At a time many leaders deflect responsibility, Uba Sani has chosen action—ensuring that the sons and daughters of Kaduna State are not punished for failures they did not cause.
