Buhari to unveil redesigned naira notes today

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari would unveil the newly designed N1,000, N500 and N200 notes on Wednesday.

Mr Emefiele made this known during the bank’s 288th Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

He also insisted that the bank won’t shift its deadline for all old notes to be returned to commercial banks in exchange for newly designed ones.

Recall that on October 26, the apex bank had disclosed plans to issue a redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 notes from December 15, 2022.

According to the CBN, the new and existing currencies would remain legal tender and circulate together until January 31, 2023.

But Mr Emeifele rescinded on the decision, saying the CBN would not wait till December 15 anymore.
