Businessman appears in court for alleged destruction of N2.5M crops

A 62 year old contractor, Emmanuel Umoasua, on Thursday appeared in a Grade 1, Area Court in Karu, Abuja, for allegedly destroying a cassava farm valued at N2.5 million.

Umoasua was arraigned on a two-count of trespass and mischief.

Prosecutor Jerry Tanshak told the court that the complainant, Edwin Ohaa of Mararaba, Nasarawa State, reported the case at the Nyanya Police Station on April 6.

Tanshak said the complainant told the police that the accused went into his land at Phase 4, Nyanya, removed the gate and destroyed the fence.

He said the accused went into the complainant’s farmland and destroyed cassava valued at N2.5 million.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 348 and 327 of the Penal Code and on conviction attract three years imprisonment or an option of fine.

The accused pleaded not guilty. The Presiding Judge, Malam Hassan Ishaq, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N1. 5 million with two sureties in like sum.

Ishaq said that one of the sureties must be a civil servant not below GL 09 while the other must be a businessman.

He ordered the sureties to deposit their drivers’ license or National identity cards with the court’s registrar, and adjourned the case till April 24. (NAN)
